Located on a 400-acre estate overlooking the River Shannon, Glin Castle is one of the most significant historic homes in Ireland. I visited Glin Castle on my first trip to Ireland and was entranced by the family’s history and passion for hospitality and historic preservation. The FitzGeralds dominated this area for centuries, and they rebuilt the castle in its current location in the 1700s, not far from the medieval ruins of their original fortress. The leaders of the family were always referred to as the Knights of Glin, and today the daughter of the 29th and final Knight of Glin owns and manages this Celebrated Home with her husband. Owners Catherine Fitzgerald and Dominic West lead a wonderful team who love sharing the home’s rich and fascinating history. Over many years, the property has been delicately restored to accommodate guests with modern comforts and amenities, all while staying true to the Castle’s original grandeur, especially when it comes to the art, furniture, and period details. A fascinating collection of family portraits and antique photographs line the walls of the foyer and other lovely sitting rooms inside the castle. With the ability to accommodate up to 30 guests, Glin Castle is an ideal setting for an exceptional family retreat, lavish getaway with a group of friends, a celebratory event, or even a smaller family that craves privacy. There is a commercial kitchen with a private chef. Each of the 15 bedrooms have their own individual bathroom with a separate bath and shower in all but one bedroom. Guests can avail of numerous facilities within the castle, including a characterful library (if only the walls could talk!) and impressive drawing room featuring a grand marble fireplace, neoclassical ceiling, and large windows overlooking the croquet lawn.
